An Annual Celebration of the free

  What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth combines the words June and nineteenth for it was on this date, June 19, 1865, that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared that all enslaved persons in the state be freed. This came two years after Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation, which did not actually free all enslaved persons in the country immediately.

Jubilee Day

The very first celebration of Juneteenth occurred in Texas on June 19, 1866. The newly freed African-American people celebrated the anniversary of their freedom through prayer, music, and barbeques. As the freedmen spread over the states, they took the tradition of Jubilee Day (or Juneteenth) with them and passed it down from generation to generation.

On June 17, 2021, June 19 became a federally recognized holiday.  Watch the presidential address here.

Thank you for coming out to celebrate the City of Lumberton's very first Juneteenth!

John and Marcia Dunlap and the rest of the Juneteenth Committee would like to take a moment to acknowledge those volunteers, panelists, vendors, community leaders, and attendees who joined us at W.H. Knuckles this July. We appreciate your time and your hard work and we hope you left feeling uplifted and informed.

While on Juneteenth we may reflect on our history and what we have overcome, we can't forget that it is a celebration! A day for recognizing, supporting, and fostering the greatness in our community and of our people.

We could not have done that without you. But we are not finished yet.

Join us June '22 in 'Celebrating Our Heroes!'

We did say it was an annual event :) .

Our first event included on-site vendors, music, a community talent show, a live discussion panel, and a career fair. We hope to bring all that back & more with Celebrating Our Heroes. Next year will feature webinars by Mr. John Dunlap and Mrs. Marcia Dunlap on job readiness and financial literacy.

Updates will continuously be added to our website and Facebook as the date approaches. Hope to see you there!
